Cutting-edge and made for the fans: Those are two ways to best describe Orlando City Soccer’s new $110 million stadium unveiled on June 10.
Capped at more than 300,000 square feet of space, the stadium includes a ton of cool features that Orlando City Soccer President Phil Rawlins deems one of the most state-of-the-art stadiums in all of soccer.
For example, the stadium comes with a sunken field that can be seen from street level. In addition, the stadium’s lion statue will be on a rotating platform that will be able to face entering fans and then rotate to watch the game.
“We really wanted that to work, and we’re glad we got it,” Rawlins said.
That, among many features, was conceived to enhance the experience for all fans, no matter where they sat, said Bruce Miller, principal with Populous, the Kansas City-based architecture firm that designed the stadium.
“The stadium overall was for the fan experience. Many of the venues in Orlando already have the best fan experience, so we wanted to reflect that in this feature,” he said.
In addition, the stadium comes with the overhanging roofs — a staple to all soccer venues — to help bounce back and reverberate fan cheers. “We designed those as low and tight as we could. The lower and tighter it can get, the better it holds sounds and the ‘fan energy’ in,” Miller said.
The city of Orlando is still working to secure the land for the project, which has been undergoing legal proceedings, but word is construction on the stadium can begin as early as this November and be completed by March 2016.
The project is slated to create upwards of 300 temporary construction jobs and another 75 jobs for game day operations.
